How to Keep Your Hammock Looking New

Just as anything else in your household that’s needs maintenance from time to time, a hammock is no different. Hammocks are made to be sturdy and tough but neglect and misuse can ruin even the strongest of any item that you own. Hammocks are made so that they can hold the weight of up to 300 to 400 pounds, survive rough weather conditions and withstand extreme heat however; they still need to be taken care of so that their life will be prolonged.
Below are some steps that should be taken to prolong the life of your hammock so that you can enjoy it for many years to come:

  • When the hammock is not being used, its a good idea to store it indoors.  You can either fold it and pack it back up or hang it from hooks inside closets.
  • A breathable bag will work wonders in maintaining your hammock.
  • Be sure that the hammock is completely dry before storing. Mold and mildew can take root if your hammock is even the slightest bit damp.
  • If you are going to wash your hammock do not use brushes or vigorously rub the material.  Note that your hammock should be able to be machine washed.
  • When using your hammock make be sure not to entangle rings, buttons, earrings or any other sharp object that may snap a thread and damage the weave. This can weaken even the strongest of woven material.
  • Hammocks that are used by one person at a time last longer.
  • The sun has been known to wear out the fabric of the hammock; therefore hammocks that are hung in the shade will last much longer.
  • Purchase a protective spray that contains chemicals which prevent mites and bugs from settling in the hammock and use it frequently.
  • Do not hang a hammock directly on hooks because this may cause wear and tear from normal friction.  The better way is to loop the chain or rope from the hook through the loop end of the hammock and then the end of the hook on the other side.
  • Hold the hammock from the end loops to prevent the ropes from getting tangled.

By following the above steps you may find that your hammock may last for many more years than if you just leave the hammock out in the elements without taking care of it.  It may not be difficult to buy a new hammock but taking care of the things that we already own will ensure that we get our money’s worth.  This is true with everything that we buy so why should a hammock be any different?
